Pittsburgh Organ Academy



Level III: The Adult Student

 

Level III of the Academy is designed for the post-high school student or adult who wishes to become an organist. Twenty-four 45-minute lessons normally from September to May with an organ teacher chosen by the POA.

Audition Requirements:

Applicants who wish to be admitted to Level III should submit a CD or sound file containing:

If auditioning on piano:

  • A two-part invention by J. S. Bach.
  • A sonatina or equivalent piece.
  • A four-part hymn.
  • If auditioning on organ:

  • One of the "little" Preludes and Fugues by J. S. Bach or a short chorale prelude from the Orgelbüchlein.
  • A piece in contrasting style.
  • A four-part hymn with pedals.

  • Award Benefits:

    Level III students will receive twenty-four 45-minute lessons normally from September to May with an organ teacher chosen by the POA.

  • Season tickets for the Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh.
  • Student membership in the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, including a subscription to The American Organist magazine.
  • Possible financial assistance in the amount of $300 to attend an AGO convention or Pipe Organ Encounter.
  • Complimentary dinners at Pittsburgh Chapter AGO meetings.
  • Terms of Award:

    Each student agrees to provide all necessary materials (organ shoes, music, transportation, etc.) and to make arrangements for a practice organ. The student commits to adequate preparation for lessons during the term of study. Students will be encouraged to perform at an AGO meeting.
